My dearest wife Ruthy:

Your little note enclosed with my lunch was certainly a delightful surprise and added
more than I can tell you to the pleasure of the meal in as much that it freed my mind of
business cares for a spell and carried my thoughts Summit-ward to dwell upon that side of
my life which for the last four years, has been so full of the most real and brightest kind of
happiness. Truly Ruthy, — and I say it from the bottom of my heart, — your whole attitude
as wife and mother has been the very embodiment of virtue and love, and my ideal has
been more than realized. I love you more and more even though I show it less; I want to
show it more, not less.

Pardon this tardy acknowledgment of your sweet note, but I hadn’t forgotten your
thoughtfulness, and decided on Wednesday to acknowledge it this way instead of verbally
when an opportunity afforded.

With the deepest affection for my dearest Ruthy and little Billy and Ethel and lots of
kisses for you all whenever I am absent, believe me to be,

Your faithful husband,

Will
